what would the effect be on an amethyst exposed to water daily?

i have a small amethyst i want to wear on a gold chain that i wear daily 24/7. But will the amethyst be spoiled if i keep it on while in the shower?

1. Well, it depends on the individual stone. Some gemstones are treated for color enhancement. Most likely, however, soap and water will not affect it adversely, other than to dull the surface-both the gold and the stone. Most stores will clean jewelry for free or you could buy a cloth to clean it yourself. On another note, as a former jewelry sales person, I don't advocate wearing any jewelry while sleeping. It puts too much pressure on the setting and the chain, but I'm overly careful. Many people wear items 24/7 as you do. I would recommend getting a jewelry cloth and taking it off at night before sleeping and merely wiping it off to remove any residue from wear. Then, after showering, put it on to wear all day. If you choose to wear it all the time, perhaps get a jewelry cleaning device, an ultrasound machine and you can clean it when needed.
2. Amethyst is a member of the quartz family. Quartz is pretty much resistant to any chemical reaction you might expose it to in the shower. This should not be a problem for the amethyst. I would be more concerned with the chain.
