How to tell if an amethyst or gemstone is real?

I have an amethyst that my grandmother bought me...ever since then, I was wondering if it was a real or a fake. I also have a collection of gemstones so pls help me!

1. it's a quartz crystal and should be cold when you touch it to your cheek. another test would be to put it under polarized sunglasses. rotate the gem and it should change color from light to dark (it's a doubly refractive gemstone). most amethysts are not very expensive.
