How do you clean an Amethyst gemstone?

I have a gold ring with a large Amethyst gemstone set on the ring. The ring is about 15 years old and through the years it has lost its shine and luster. In short, it doesn't sparkle like it should. How do I clean the gemstone to bring back that shine?

It may be worth taking into account how you are storing this ring.
